BEHIND THE NAME "COMET"

Comets are some of the oldest travelers in our Solar System. They're made primarily of frozen gases, rock and dust and are leftovers from the formation of our Solar System roughly 4.6 billion years ago.

When a comet travels close enough to the Sun, it heats up and releases gas and dust. This creates the glowing cloud around it and the spectacular tails we associate with comets. A comet can actually develop two tails—a dust tail and an ion/gas tail—and those tails point away from the Sun.

Some comets originate in the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune, while many long-period comets are believed to originate much farther away in the enormous Oort Cloud surrounding our Solar System.

THE STORY OF COMET

Long before there were Novas, there was a little astronaut staring into the stars.

He wondered what was beyond the next planet, what was hiding in the darkness, and just how far someone could travel if they were brave enough to keep going. So, he went.

Everybody was curious but, nobody wanted to take the risk. He flew past planets, crossed fields of stars and followed a brilliant comet as it raced across the darkness. The comet disappeared into the distance, but it's glowing trail remained behind.

That's when the little astronaut realized something. You don't have to stay forever to leave something behind.

When he finally returned home, he was given the name Comet in honor of the traveler that had shown him the way. And when Supernova needed someone to begin a new mission on Earth, there was only one Nova they could send first.

And wherever Comet's journey takes him next, he'll leave a little light behind.
