BEHIND THE NAME “Mercury”?

Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system and the planet closest to the Sun.
It also travels around the Sun faster than any other planet, completing an entire orbit in only about 88 Earth days. Because of that incredible speed, Mercury was named after the swift messenger of the Roman gods.
Mercury is the first planet from the Sun, orbiting at an average distance of about 36 million miles. Mercury travels around the Sun at roughly 29 miles per second, making it the fastest-orbiting planet in our solar system. Because of this, one year on Mercury lasts only 88 Earth days.
The distance to the sun and no atmosphere means Mercury’s daytime temperatures can climb to around 800°F, while nighttime temperatures can fall to approximately -290°F. Mercury's surface is covered with thousands of craters created by impacts over billions of years, giving it an appearance somewhat similar to Earth's Moon.

Mercury was never very good at staying put. From the moment he joined the Nova program, there was always somewhere else he wanted to explore.
Another crater.

Another distant light in the darkness.
While the other Novas carefully studied their mission maps, Mercury had usually already disappeared down the hallway. His commanders eventually stopped asking him to slow down, as it never mattered anyway.

Mercury became one of Supernova's fastest explorers, traveling ahead of the others and searching unfamiliar worlds for safe landing zones. Then came his strangest assignment yet. Earth. Mercury's mission brought him to Amarillo, Texas, where he was ordered to remain hidden and observe the humans without being discovered.

Mercury’s anticipated spirit led to his eventual capture. But lucky for him, his discoverer was not hostile. Mercury's mission was over. The fastest Nova in the fleet had finally been caught.
And according to Mercury?
He only let them catch him…..
